5 Tips for Your First Time on a Segway

Welcome to the island! Aruba is a beautiful, happy place to visit. The warm weather, gentle surf, white beaches, and crystal-clear water are enough to make anyone fall in love with the water and the island itself. Of course, that’s not all Aruba has to offer! With many historical sites and its famous Caribbean architecture, there are plenty of things to do when you’re not on the coast (although, you’re never far).

When you go on a guided segway tour with us at Aruba Adventure Tours, you can choose from three different tours. In the first tour, you’ll visit the California Lighthouse. The next, we’ll visit Malmok Island, home of Malmok Beach, one of the best beaches in Aruba. You can also opt for a private tour where we can take you and a small party to discover untouched paradise in many different areas around the island.

Is it going to be your first time on a segway? Here are five tips you should keep in mind to keep you safe on our segway adventure tours.

  • Slow and Steady

People say slow and steady wins the race, and with segways, that’s always the case. If it’s your first time, you don’t want to start out too fast. While these machines aren’t difficult to master after a short time, you want to start by making patient, calculated movements, learning the nature of your machine.

  • Foot Placement is Key

Try to keep your feet centered over the wheel. The more even your feet are, the more control you’ll have over your speed and your stopping capability.

  • Shift Your Weight

Even though segways have handlebars, they don’t work like you would expect them to. Unlike a bike or ATV, the handlebars on a segway function primarily as a way to help you balance. They don’t do your turning, stopping, or starting for you, so make sure you’re shifting your weight in the direction you intend to go.

  • Balance Like a Gymnast

When you’re shifting your weight, you need to stay balanced. Sure, you don’t have to be Simone Biles, but you should be able to maintain your balance fairly well. The more balanced you can keep yourself, the more fun you’ll be able to have on your segway.

  • Know Your Limits

Once you’ve mastered the preliminary skills needed to ride on your machine, you might feel unstoppable. We encourage all of our riders to drive their segways safely, with mid-range speeds and high levels of control. We don’t want you or anyone else to get hurt while they’re out exploring the island.
